Hunting Dog Training Tips

I had the misfortune of having to put my hunting partner down last week. I ran across a pup over the weekend so I now have a dog. It has been several years since I had a pup, and this one has me confused. He was 11 weeks old when I got him and I only have had him for 2 days, but my question is when I try to play fetch with him, he just runs to the object sniffs it and sometimes will pick it up and bring it towards me a couple if steps. Is this a lack if interest to retrieve or just a puppy being a pup. Thanks .

Right now it sounds like "you ran across a pup this weekend and now have a dog".
What kind of dog is it. What is its history. Who were the owners.

You're correct. He is a lab, both parents are hunters, I have done my homework on him, but you never know about a pup. Thanks.

my guess is.........you can train him to be a fine retriever.
and by the way....
sorry about your recent heartache of losing your "hunting partner".
that's always a very sad ordeal.

Sorry about your loss. I have a male black as well just over 1 year old and he did the same thing at first. Would be half way interested in it and not really retrieve "puppy distractions". My advice is to not push him too hard right away, its alot for them to take in, especially when its only been two days. He needs to get a feel for you as well. What did work for my pup was putting him in the hallway with the doors to rooms shut and tossing his dummy down the hall. less distractions that way. Having patience is key too, it takes alot of patience and then one day you'll see it all click and come together and you have a stud retriever.!
