I am getting my first dog (Yellow Labrador retriever) and I wanted to train the dog myself. I was wondering for those of you that train your own dogs. Is there any training DVDs or books you would recommend? Do you use just one method or do you blend multiple together for a more personalized program? Also any advice you can give would be great.

I bought the Sound Beginnings DVD and i was thinking about getting the Mike Lardy Total Retriever Training and Total Retriever Marking DVDs. I was wondering if these DVDs are more for training your dog for hunting dog competitions or hunting a field? ( I know a lot of the stuff translates over but wanted to get your guys idea if I need both or just one or if there is another DVD set out there?)

I'm hoping Tim or Kg will chime in on this or someone with more knowledge of TRT (it's still on my Christmas list.....).

"Total Retriever Training" is what would be used to start your formal training and take you through to a finished level.  It would take you through his flow chart.  "Total Retriever Marking" is additional knowledge and drills to enhance marking (when the dog sees the thrown/shot bumper or bird).  This is as I understand what the videos entail.  I don't own them yet.  He also has his Force Fetch (FF) video among other publications.

I've followed Fowl Dogs by Rick Stawski, which is Carr based, and had a lot of help from Kg.  I believe my dog is doing pretty good.  Also check with Kg to see if he has any Gun Intro videos left.  He put together a great little video on it.

The foundations and fundamentals for hunting fields and hunt tests are generally the same for the dog, we change the game to suit our human needs and wants.

You will have a fine gun dog if you follow the Lardy series.

Hope that helps.

I was actually able to access the forum today!

Thanks a lot for all of the info guys. I am a little nervous about training my first dog, but this forum helps a lot with a bunch of good info. I am going to buy the Mike Lardy TRT and TRM DVD set combo and give it a try.

Time to see what the wife says about spending $270 on DVDs lol.

I noticed we haven't mentioned it yet in this thread, but get with your local retriever club, a local pro, or an experienced amateur.  They can be invaluable resource.  You'll find folks to train with and a lot of knowledge.  Be willing to help out and the info available is limitless.  From the sounds of your posts, it doesn't sound like you want to test/trial and that is fine.  I don't either but these avenues will open other doors for you that you're not even thinking about right now.

Glad to see you have the "Sound Beginnings", watch it several times and take notes on sequence (watch for ages of dogs) of drills.  It's not a race and most important - HAVE FUN!!

This might be a stupid question but how do i go about finding a club? Is there anything to watch out for when just google'ing a club? Is there a better resource to use to find a good one? I imagine there has got to be a lot where I am, because I am located by Milwaukee WI.

Sorry for all of the rookie questions. I would search the forum but it wont let me it never finds anything.

You've got some good folks around there to train with.  I know the Wisconsin Amatuer Field Trial Assoc. is housed down there somewhere and has some land.  I believe West Allis also has an AKC club but I'm not positive.  Whether you go AKC or UKC for a retriever club doesn't matter to much, just the games they play.  Do a google search for retriever training clubs in WI.

You have the Bong area to train at (a good part of the year).  There are a lot of good Amatuers down there.  Get in somewhere and you'll probably be able to find groups to train with most nights of the week, if you want to travel a little.

Good Luck!

Madison has some great grounds to train on.  At worst, you could contact the Madison Area Retriever Club.  Just do a search for it.

As far as running the $270 dollars by your bride, keep in mind that a vet bill for a dog that gets hit by a car, shredded up by another dog, cut up by a barbed wire fence...etc.....will likely be much higher than the 270 you will pay to up the odds in your favor that your dog will listen when you give a command and hopefully avoid any of the above mentioned situations.

You have car insurance right?  I bet it's more expensive per year than this insurance.

Kg Dang Kg, you've been holding out on me, I could have used that argument when I got Gus!  The Christmas Wish List didn't pan out again so I'm back to trade and barter system which has not got me there yet (just more decoys.....)  Just think you could have gotten rid of me sooner!  :D
